AR Tarot Card Collection

This project’s objective was to create a print that could be any topic and any design that was informational and included and Augmented Reality(AR) experience. We had to have a least one AR experience depending on how complex the AR was, correlated to the amount of AR experiences we needed to make. I chose my topic to be tarot cards specifically the 22 Major Arcana cards because I knew each card had a different subject and had meanings and reverse meaning for them.

For this project I physically created the 22 Major Arcana tarot cards, 6 QR cards for the AR experiences, and the packaging for the whole set. I animated every card using Adobe After Effects to bring the cards to life for the AR experience. The AR experience was created with Adobe Aero for the card animation flipping, card meaning animation, button animation, and sound effects.

The illustrations and meanings were made in Illustrator, the animations of the subjects of the cards (ie. the tilting burlap sack, spinning wheel, etc) were created in After Effects, the interactive Augmented Reality(AR) experience was created in Aero.

Tarot Card Iterations

For my first iteration I did a lot of research into the different styles of tarot cards as well as there meanings, so I did not make many cards except for the celestial ones and the back designs. I wanted the celestial cards to be connected in some form so I had them all have circles orbiting them. the back design I knew I wanted something celestial as well because it is associated with mystical things and fate.

For my second iteration I created the base designs for all of the cards with no backgrounds. I made sure to use similar or the same colors throughout the designs to create cohesion. For the front I decided on a fancy border for the card and script font to lean into the magical feeling. I chose purple for the base of the card for it mystical associations and the border and words to be gold for the contrast to the purple. I changed the arrangement of the elements of the back design but the back did not connect well with the front style.

For my final iteration I added all the backgrounds to all the cards, ensuring I used colors used in the subjects of the cards for cohesion. For the back of the card I decided to use the elements of the border I used for the front in the back with also making the celestial times more of a line art style to match the border.

I also created the QR cards which are a blue to match the tarot cards but still be separate. I used the border elements of the tarot cards for the QR cards. Each of the QR cards has a maximum of 4 QR codes on them to ensure there is less chance of interference with scanning the codes.

Finally I also created the packaging for the cards using the purple and blue base of the cards. The inside I made blue while the outside was made purple in combination with the same border elements of the cards to design the packaging.
